RIP Paul Phillips

It is with great sadness that we share news of Paul Phillip’s passing. Not only was Paul known for his impressive resume, working as stage manager for Broadway shows including PippinSweet Charity, and Chicago and with stars like Judy Garland, Ann Miller, Charlton Heston, Groucho Marx, Ethel Waters, Don Ameche, Tallulah Bankhead and Billie Burke, Paul was one of Gwen Verdon’s dearest friends. The two remained close companions as they grew older. Even after their years of working together in the theater, Paul and Gwen had coffee or spoke every morning. “He was part of our family,” recalls Nicole Fosse. “They adopted each other.”

Paul is remembered for his indelible contributions to the industry, making theatrical masterpieces come to life and maintain their integrity and sparkle for eight shows per week. What really separated him from the pack, though, was his loyalty, kindness, and sincere respect for his colleagues, coworkers, and friends. We’d like to think Paul and Gwen are drinking coffee and sharing a good laugh…Those were the good old days.
